Brian Stelter: We need to talk about whether news as we know it can survive a post-fact era

Feb 01, 2017

On January 31st, Brian Stelter - CNN reporter and host of Reliable Sources - discussed to a diverse crowd from the world of media about the true role of journalism in this so-called 'post-truth' era in lieu with the recent events of Donald Trump's actions as the new POTUS. Stelter tells the audience that to adapt to this new era and with influential people like Trump, the media must use this as a chance for reinvention and creation and not a moment to be pessimistic. We should think through the possibilities, be prepared for those worst-case scenarios, but recognize there is an abundance of great journalism today.

"Will news as we know it even survive? ... Can news as we know it survive if we think it’s a post-fact era? Now, I dismiss that — I don’t think it’s a post-truth, post-fact era. It’s only a post-truth world if we all in this room let it be a post-truth world — if we all collectively, all of us give up on truth. But will news as we know it survive attempts to delegitimize the profession? “Can news as we know it actually thrive” would be the more optimistic question, and the answer is yes.- Brian Stelter, 2017

"[A]ll of us are the future of news — all of us can seek out great journalism. All of us can support it and help spread it. But let’s recognize: This is the moment journalists live for. This, right now, these weeks, these months, these four, maybe eight years. This is it."

THE MEDIA IS NOT DEAD.

Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, staed in a speech of his that the traditional media are basically "dead men walking".  What does The Huffington Post's Jure Klepic say about this? "Bullsh*t! Traditional media is not dead now and never will be."

24/7 Wall St./Harris Poll revealed that the majority of American adults believe that in ten years traditional media will not exist any longer; however, Klepic would state the opposite. Survey results still show that the people want information, just in fresher means of receiving them.

"While we agree that social media may be the future, it is still not an exact science. Social media has existed since the first human being set foot on earth; in the past, though, we simply referred to it as creating tribes." - Jeric Klepic, 2012
